What is a check valve?

A check valve, or one-way valve, is a mechanical device used to control the flow through a pipeline. It allows the flow of fluid in one direction while preventing or limiting the flow in the opposite direction.

The primary function of a check valve is to ensure that fluid flows in a single direction and to prevent backflow. It consists of a valve body with an inlet and an outlet, and a movable mechanism or disc that allows flow in one direction and blocks it in the opposite direction.

When the fluid flows in the desired direction, the pressure of the fluid forces the check valve’s mechanism or disc to open, allowing pass through. However, when the fluid tries to flow in the opposite direction or backflow occurs, the check valve’s mechanism or disc is forced into a closed position. This prevents the fluid from moving backward.
