What is a Butterfly Valve?

Butterfly valves are a type of quarter-turn valve that regulate or isolate the flow of fluid in a pipeline. It consists of a disc or a plate that rotates, allowing or blocking the flow of the fluid. The disc is positioned perpendicular to the flow when the valve is fully closed and parallel to the flow when the valve is fully open.

The design of a butterfly valve is characterized by its thin disc/plate, which is mounted in the centre of the pipe and connected to a shaft. When the valve is in the open position, the disc is rotated parallel to the direction of the flow, allowing the fluid to pass through with minimal obstruction. By rotating the disc, the valve can be partially or fully closed, restricting or stopping the flow of the fluid.

Why Butterfly Valves?

Butterfly valves are known for their quick and easy operation, as they require only a quarter-turn to open or close. They are used in applications where fast response and throttling are required. Butterfly valves are commonly used in industries such as water treatment, HVAC systems, power generation, chemical processing, and oil and gas.

The advantages of butterfly valves include their compact design, lightweight construction, and overall low cost compared to other types of valves. They offer good flow control characteristics, have a high flow capacity, and provide tight shut-off when fully closed. Another benefit of butterfly valves is their simple structure with fewer parts, which makes them easy to install, operate, and maintain.

Butterfly valves are versatile and widely used in various industries due to their efficient flow control, quick operation, and cost-effectiveness.
